History of the Cave:
The Pataleshwar Temple is rock-cut cave temple, carved out in 8th century in the Rashtrakuta period. It is located in what is ow Pune, in the state of Maharastra, India. It is originally situated outside the town but the city expands so much that it is now located on the downtown Jangli Maharaj Road.
It has been declared as a protected monument by the government.
The temple was left incomplete , possibly because of the fault line found at the backof the sasanctum sanctorum, which made the furthur sculpting unsafe, or political upheaval resulting in the loss of patronage.A brass temple bell hangs outside the basalt entryway.
The temple , made of basalt-rock, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. The sanctum- a cube shaped room about 3-4 meters on each side - house a linga- the symbol of Shiva and there are two smaller cells on each side. In front of the cave is a circular Nandimandapa, its umbrella shaped canopy supported by massive square pillars.
Inspiteof being right in the center of city with lots of noise outside, this temple is very peaceful & quite. Must visit this place
